Meet the Artists

Walter Steding

Walter Steding was an American artist and musician born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and raised in Harmony, PA. A fixture of New York City's late-1970s No Wave and punk scenes, Steding built his reputation as an otherworldly one-man band — performing on electric violin alongside self-built synthesizers, EEG biofeedback devices, and flashing goggles — opening for Blondie, The Ramones, and Suicide at CBGB's. He went on to collaborate with David Byrne, Jim Carroll, Robert Fripp, Chic, and Panther Burns, among others.

A longtime assistant to Andy Warhol and a fixture at The Factory, Steding's world always lived at the intersection of art and music. His visual work — portraits, still lifes, and allegorical paintings — blended classical technique with Pop sensibility, weaving in metaphysical themes and cultural commentary that probed questions of identity and spirituality.

Walter Steding passed away in November 2025. He is remembered as a singular voice in American art and music, and a beloved member of the Silver Art community. May he rest in peace.
