Angela China

Angela China (b. 1985, Baltimore, MD) is a New York-based artist whose practice spans street art, figurative painting, and abstract expression. After relocating to New York City in 2010, she began her career in street art, creating narratives that engaged with the city’s complexities, controversies, and women’s issues. In an overwhelmingly male-dominated scene, China emerged as one of the few women making an impact in the space.

In 2017, she transitioned from street art to fine art by enrolling in the Master of Fine Arts program at The New York Academy of Art, a decision that marked the beginning of her studio practice which she maintains today. At NYAA, China focused on human anatomy and classical painting techniques, which deepened her understanding of the human form. As her technical abilities grew, so did her desire to move beyond realism, seeking to convey the soul of womanhood and the female experience without literal representation.

Her work now aims to evoke a universal emotional experience, using abstraction to hint at the essence of women—without directly depicting them. The skills she honed at NYAA serve as the foundation for her abstract approach to art, where she continues to explore themes of femininity, vulnerability, and humanity.
